"We had two strikes against us, and things didn’t look good. No medical insurance, and the local medical folks had no idea what to do and no sense of urgency. The Hogue Vein Institute, as we discovered, had two things in particular going for them – compassion and expertise.

My wife, Carole, had been pained and a little embarrassed for a number of years by the varicose veins in her legs. An ulcerated vein on her ankle and a careless slip while shaving brought everything to a head. Our family physician offered little more than antibiotics and a band-aid. The local surgeon wanted a $1000 for an ultrasound evaluation just to see if she “was a candidate” for their prohibitively expensive surgery. The next step was up to us.

Our next step was prayer. The answer appeared on a billboard spotted while driving through the Twin Cities. "HogueVein.com" it said. I had no idea who they were. I made a point of remembering the name. My research on the internet gave me the confidence to call them.

After describing our circumstance to the Patient Care Coordinator at Hogue Vein Institute, she urged us to get Carole in quickly. Our ability to pay was not their concern, but Carole’s well being most apparently was. That call came on a day of extreme pain for Carole, and a visit to the local urgent care facility. Another band-aid. We made an appointment with Hogue Vein for the next day.

Carole's case turned out to be one of the more severe that they had seen. We scheduled her EVLA procedure for the next two days …Friday the left leg, Saturday the right.

This was January, mind you. An icy, stormy 200-mile drive to Hogue Vein turned out to be much more harrowing than did the laser surgery. I was allowed to be present through the entire procedure. Within 24 hours after treating her left leg those ankle ulcers, the ones that had lingered as open wounds for almost 4 months, were closing and fast on the way to healing. On Saturday her right leg was treated in under an hour, and we were headed home. Carole was back at work on Monday.

Moderate discomfort during the procedure, faithful follow-up thereafter. Treadmill, compression stockings and subsequent injection sclerotherapy. Carole has her legs back ...not quite like they were 30 years ago, but wonderfully reminiscent thereof. And getting her back into those stockings now and then has given us more than a few laughs.

I can’t say for sure that her life was saved. But her legs were. We found professionalism, a high level of technical and medical know-how and some wonderful people at the Hogue Vein Institute.
